What prevents a construction sector to adopt
What prevents a construction sector to adopt

History has shown that innovative new technologies are critical to increasing productivity, quality, and safety in the construction industry. While the innovation process has been studied in the past, the procedures that businesses use to decide which technology to adopt have received little attention. This paper presents the preliminary findings of an ongoing study to better understand the processes, information sources, and critical success factors that businesses rely on when purchasing new technologies. It presents an adoption model that has been validated through an in-depth study of vendor strategies and visitor behaviour at two Australian equipment exhibitions. Vendors displayed a wide range of products, from spirit levels to large hydraulic excavators, and used a variety of methods to entice potential customers to their booths. The analysis presented below categorises each vendor booth using a variety of measures such as the nature of the product, the area occupied, and the type of information provided. The analysis, as expected, reveals dense clusters of vendors employing similar strategies, which are heavily influenced by the size of the vendor company and the technology. The data also supports the adoption model, as vendors employ specific techniques to meet the needs of both novices and more informed customers, with the goal of establishing a relationship that extends beyond the exhibit.
