What percentage of hospitals provide at least some charity care? Based on a random sample of hospital reports from eastern states, the following information is obtained (units in percentage of hospitals providing at least some charity care): 56.7 56.1 52.5 65.5 59.0 64.7 70.1 64.7 53.5 78.2 A USE SALT Assume that the population of x values has an approximately normal distribution. (a) Use a calculator with mean and sample standard deviation keys to find the sample mean percentage x and the sample standard deviation s. (Round your answers to four decimal places.) X%3D % (b) Find a 90% confidence interval for the population average u of the percentage of hospitals providing at least some charity care. (Round your answers to one decimal place.) lower limit upper limit
Continuous Probability Distributions
Probability distributions are of two types, which are continuous probability distributions and discrete probability distributions. A continuous probability distribution contains an infinite number of values. For example, if time is infinite: you could count from 0 to a trillion seconds, billion seconds, so on indefinitely. A discrete probability distribution consists of only a countable set of possible values.
Normal Distribution
Suppose we had to design a bathroom weighing scale, how would we decide what should be the range of the weighing machine? Would we take the highest recorded human weight in history and use that as the upper limit for our weighing scale? This may not be a great idea as the sensitivity of the scale would get reduced if the range is too large. At the same time, if we keep the upper limit too low, it may not be usable for a large percentage of the population!
