Expert Solution
Step 1
The term 'Virus 'is derived from a Latin word which means 'poison'. Viruses are simple, noncellular entities consisting of one or more molecules of either DNA or RNA enclosed in a coat of protein called the capsid. Viruses are smaller than prokaryotic cells ranging from 002 to 0.3 m in size. A virus is both living and nonliving. It is inert (inactive) outside the host cell, so are nonliving organisms. Viral nucleic acids are active (multiply and infect) inside the living host cell, so are living. A fully assembled virus that is infectious is called a virion. The function of the virion is to transfer its DNA or RNA into the host cell. So viruses are obligate intracellular parasites.
