The distinctive aspect of a topographic map with the use of contour lines of altitude to indicate the shape of the crust of the ground. Altitude contours are artificial borders connecting points that have the same altitude up or down a fixed point on the earth's surface, which is typically (MSL)mean sea level. Contours for showing the height and form of the hills, the depths of the floor of the sea and the elevation changes of the slopes.
U.S. Geographical Survey topographic maps also display many other types of geographic characteristics including roads , railways, rivers , streams, ponds, borders, names of places or features, mountain ranges, and even more. Aged maps (submitted before 2006) show extra features such as paths, buildings, cities, elevations to the mountains and monitoring points. Over time, those would be introduced to more existing maps.
