Question

What kind of discrimination occurs on the basis of sexual orientation?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Sexual orientation includes a wide array of sexual behavior and identity, like the sexual feelings of an individual, the sexual group they are attracted to, and so on. Sexuality is a very personal aspect for every individual. However, it has been politicized in modern society as it acts as a form of social identity.

Step 2

Homosexuality is still frowned upon in many societies. This is because heteronormativity is the general social norm. Traditionally heterosexism is the only acceptable sexual orientation. This often gives rise to homophobia. The prejudice that prevails around the diverse sexual orientations of people might give rise to sexual segregation and stratification.

Homosexual couples are often looked down upon and discriminated against in most societies. Social benefits like family pensions, health insurance benefits for couples, and marital laws are often insufficient for them. Homosexual marriage is not considered valid in many societies. Adoption rights are not available for homosexual couples. Even if they are available, there are lengthy formalities that discourage them from adopting children.

They are excluded from social gatherings and events. Their children are also looked down upon and made fun of or ridiculed. This may have severe consequences on their mental health. This often forces them to keep their identities a secret.

Homosexuality is considered strictly illegal in several countries. People are punished with prolonged imprisonment and even death for having a particular sexual orientation.
