What is the role of microorganisms in the colon?
The colon or the large intestine is the part of the alimentary canal that collect the undigested food after completion of digestion. The colon is divided into 3 - Ascending colon, Transverse colon and descending colon.
The colon contains microorganism like bacteria’s - anaerobes, Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium that play a major role in the formation of energy from the non-digested food that is received from the small intestine. The bacteria are also involved in the synthesis of vitamins like ‘K’ and ‘B’ and involved in various other metabolic mechanisms of bile production. Microorganisms also help in the dissociation of undigested food, neutralizes the harmful effects of digestive byproduct, and aid in mucus secretion.
