Question

What is the re-translocation process in trees? What nutrients are involved and where are they stored?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Because of their crucial roles in numerous cellular processes required to plant metabolism, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are arguably the two most important macronutrients for controlling plant growth and productivity in terrestrial environments. Through the numerous photosynthetic proteins, nitrogen has been linked to the uptake of carbon by plants, whereas P is an essential part of energy metabolism (ATP and Pi) and is involved in the production of important macromolecules such nucleic acids, phospholipids, ribosomes, and sugar phosphates.

However, particularly in forest habitats on nutrient-poor soils, both of these vital nutrients are frequently insufficient in relation to a plant's growth needs. Plant metabolism can be impacted by N and P shortages. Because N and P naturally co-vary, the majority of native ecosystems show substantial N- or P-limitation, or a co-limitation of both. However, P-limitation is more common in older, heavily weathered soils, whereas N-limitation can happen more frequently than P-limitation in geologically young soils. In addition to their functional connections to photosynthetic assimilation rates and growth, N and P concentrations in green leaves are significant because they may control the carbon (C) and nutrient cycles as well as the food webs in terrestrial ecosystems.
