What is the potential of a redox electrode (relative to SHE) in which a platinum wire is immersed in a solution containing 0.075 M Sn+2 and 0.310 M Sn+4?  What would the potential of the indicating electrode if it was measured relative to an SCE electrode?

  1. a) What is the potential of a redox electrode (relative to SHE) in which a platinum wire is immersed in a solution containing 0.075 M Sn+2 and 0.310 M Sn+4?  What would the potential of the indicating electrode if it was measured relative to an SCE electrode?

               b) Calculate the potential of the following cell:

               Pt ǀ Cr3+ (2.00x10-4 M) Cr2+ (1.50x10-3 M)ǁ Pb2+(5.60x10-2 M) ǀ Pb

Is the cell spontaneous as written?

Standard potentials needed for both sections:

              Sn4+ + 2e-  →   Sn2+          E0 = 0.15 Volts

              Cr3+ + e-     →  Cr2+           E0 = -0.424 Volts

             Pb2+ + 2e-  → Pb               E0 = -0.13    Volts
