Question
what is the percent by volume of a solution formed by added 15 L of acetone to 28 L of water?
Expert Solution
Step 1: Determination of %Volume of acetone in the given solution

Percentage volume of  a solution is give by:

%Volume=Volume of solute of interest Total Volume of solution ×100

Here, acetone is the solute and the total solution consists of acetone and water.

Volume of acetone = 15 L

Volume of water = 28 L

Total volume of solution =Volume of Acetone + Volume of water = 15L + 28 L = 43 L

Now substituting corresponding values in %Volume/volume formula as:

          %Volume=Volume of solute of interest Total Volume of solution ×100%Volume=15 L 43 L ×100%Volume=0.3488×100%Volume=34.88%

Therefore %Volume of acetone in the solution is 35%.
