The benefits of rooming-in are one of the first things you learn when entering OB or encountering a newborn which is skin to skin bonding within minutes of birth. (Ricci, et. al, 2020). Rooming-in has been developed over the last few years since previously the newborn was cared mostly by nursing staff to allow mother's to rest and recover. "Rooming-in allows you to develop confidence in caring for your baby. It also allows you to be able to read your baby's cues so you know if your infant is sleepy/hungry." (Center, 2020). This process allows patients to adjust to new motherhood with the proper educators/help around to help feel at ease and comfortable. Rooming-in can help regulate sleep patterns, encouraging the baby to sleep when you sleep and allow the mother to enjoy small naps before discharge. "...long-term breastfeeding as recommended by the WHO and UNICEF "(Cardaci, 2017). The sooner the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is instilled, the sooner the newborn can be breastfed as the article states is most beneficial. This process can also help the baby sleep better overall, regulates body temperature/blood sugar and decreased stress hormone levels. "Mothers who room in are less likely to develop postpartum depression." (Center, 2020). Postpartum depression can affect one in seven women and it can cause life long depression. The downside to rooming-in is the risk for newborn falls. To ensure less falls of the newborn there can be teachings and methods demonstrated to keep the newborn safe. " Increasing parental awareness, understanding, and participation in safe sleep practice creates and maintains a safer infant environment in the hospital setting." (Lafaver, 2018). Research in this article has shown that from June 2016 to June 2017 there have been no reports of an infant fall with at least 80% of their mothers breastfeeding. Rooming-in not only helps mothers in many ways, but it helps their babies as well. This outweighs the risk for newborn falls on both mother and baby accounts.
