IEEE 1394 is a serial bus interface protocol for high-speed communications and real-time, isochronous data transfer. It was developed by Apple in collaboration with a number of businesses, mainly Sony and Panasonic, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The interface is called FireWire by Apple. The i.LINK (Sony) and Lynxx brands are both renowned (Texas Instruments).
Up to 4.5 metres (15 ft) long may be the copper cable used in its most common implementation. Over this cable, power and data are carried, enabling devices with moderate power requirements to operate without a separate power supply. Also available in the Cat 5 and optical fiber models is FireWire.

IEEE 1394 is a high-speed data-transfer serial bus architecture. FireWire is a serial bus, meaning that one bit at a time, data is transferred. A variety of different physical connections are used by parallel buses, which are generally more expensive and usually heavier as such. IEEE 1394 completely supports both isochronous and asynchronous applications.
