what is the full and net reaction of

1. H2O + aluminum

2. H2O + calcium

Expert Solution
Step 1

Redox Reaction:

Some chemical species are good reducing agents, which means that certain atoms inside are readily oxidized. In this process they give up valence electrons to increase their oxidation state. The lost electrons are gained by another atom that is reduced, with this reduced atom part of an oxidizing agent. Pairing the agents together creates a redox reaction. If the reaction involves oxidized/reduced species in aqueous solution, then the balanced equation can also be represented in ionic or net ionic forms.

 (1) This question deals with the redox reaction between aluminum metal and water. The aluminum is oxidized (reducing agent) from zero in the metal to +3 in aluminum cation, which pairs with hydroxide ion to form aluminum hydroxide. Simultaneously, some hydrogen atoms of water (oxidizing agent) are reduced from +1 to zero in diatomic hydrogen gas.

The balanced molecular reaction equation is:

• 2Al(s) + 6H2O (l) ---> 2Al(OH)3(aq) + 3H2(g) .

The net ionic equation is similar, in which we assume that the aqueous aluminum hydroxide product is fully dissociated:

  •   2Al(s) + 6H2O (l) ---> 2Al3+(aq)+6OH-(aq)+ 3H2(g) .
