Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, and other essential functions. They are composed of two parts — the cortex and the medulla — which are each responsible for producing different hormones. When adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones, this can lead to adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease). The adrenal cortex produces two main groups of corticosteroid hormones—glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. The adrenal medulla does not perform any vital functions. But that hardly means the adrenal medulla is useless. The hormones of the adrenal medulla are released after the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated, which occurs when you’re stressed.
