Question
what is the difference between a sulfer atom and a sulfer molecule?
Expert Solution
Step 1 Sulfur Atom
The sulfur atom is an oxygen group element of atomic number 16. It consists of six valence electrons and exists in multiple valence states.
Step 2 Sulfur Molecule
The Sulfur molecule is an octatomic molecule consisting of eight sulfur atoms bonded to each other in a cyclic fashion where one sulfur atom is connected to two sulfur atoms. They do not form stable sulfur-sulfur double bonds. Hence they exist as S8 molecule forming single bonds among eight sulfur atoms in a circular fashion.
