Step 1
Leaves are the aerial parts of plants. The uppermost surface of the leaves is called the epidermis. A large surface area of leaves is exposed to the atmosphere.
Step 2
Cutin is a waxy substance and is composed of fatty acid esters. It repels water.
Step 3
Since leaves have a large surface area exposed to the atmosphere, a large amount of water absorbed by roots is evaporated from the leaf ’s surface. To reduce the water loss or to prevent it, the epidermal cells of leaves secrete a waxy layer of cutin.
