Question

what is the chemical formula for ethane?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The compounds that are composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms are known are hydrocarbons.

Hydrocarbons are classified into two types as follows:

  • Saturated hydrocarbon – The compound in which the carbon atom is connected with other carbon atom by single bond are known as saturated hydrocarbon. They are also known as Alkane. The general formula of alkane is CnH2n+2 where n represents the number of atoms.
  • Unsaturated hydrocarbon – The compound in which the carbon atom is connected with other carbon atom by either double or triple bond are known as unsaturated hydrocarbon. They are further classified on the basis of number of bonds present. If the bond between carbon and carbon is double, then it is alkene and if the bond between carbon and carbon is triple, then it is alkyne. The general formula of alkene and alkyne is CnH2n and CnH2n-2 respectively where n represents the number of atoms.
Step 2

“Eth” means there are 2 carbon atoms and “ane” means the compound is a saturated compound.

Thus, the chemical formula for ethane will be as follows:
