What is stimulus control?
What is stimulus control?
One of the concepts of behavioral psychology is operant conditioning, which is also referred to as instrumental conditioning. It is a type of learning in which an organism associates the outcomes of a behavior with the behavior itself. If the outcome is positive, it is likely that the behavior is going to be repeated. If not, it is not likely to be repeated.
Consequently, operant conditioning utilizes reinforcements and punishments in order to strengthen or weaken a behavior. If a behavior is followed by reinforcement(s) (pleasant/positive), it is likely to be strengthened and repeated. However, if it is followed by punishment(s) (aversive/negative), it is not likely to be repeated.
Stimulus control is a concept that comes under operant conditioning.
