The salivary glands in mammals are types of exocrine glands that produce saliva through a system of ducts. Humans have three paired major salivary glands: parotid, submandibular and sublingual gland, and many minor salivary glands.

The pancreas is made up of the exocrine component and the endocrine component.

The majority of pancreas comprises ‘exocrine’ cells, that produce enzymes to help with the digestion of food. The exocrine cells release enzymes into small tube-like ducts which eventually join together to form the main pancreatic duct. The main pancreatic duct runs the length of the pancreas and releases the enzymes produced by the exocrine cells into the duodenum (small intestine).
The second functional component of pancreas is made up of ‘endocrine’ cells. These endocrine cells are called ‘islets of Langerhans’. These cells are responsible for the production of hormones, such as insulin and glucagon and secrete them directly into the bloodstream. These hormones help regulate the blood sugar (glucose) levels of the body.
