What is Parental Bonding Instrument ?
The Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) is a battery that is widely used to assess parental behaviors. PBI is developed by G. Parker, L.B. Brown, and H. Tupling in 1979 to measure two attributes of parenting behaviors name overprotectiveness and care.
PBI is a psychometric measure that is retrospective in nature. It means that individuals over 16 years answer this measure according to how they remembered their parents' attitudes and behaviors during the first 16 years. PBI is completed separately for both parents, having separate Father Form and Mother Form. It has 25 item questions: 12 items of care, and 13 items of overprotectiveness. Each item 4 options: "Very Like", Moderately Like", "Moderately Unlike", and "Very Unlike".
