What is Nonnegativity constraints? * This is a required question What is Slack variable? *
Linear programming is used to find optimal values for specific products to maximize profit (or revenue) and minimize cost. Due to the scarcity of resources and better economic value, the firms need to identify the best combinations of a number of products to be produced or sold in the market.
As mentioned earlier, linear programming is used to determine the optimal number of products to be produced or sold, these figures cannot be negative. For instance, a firm produces chairs and tables. In order to produce chairs and tables, the firm uses labor hours, material, and energy (electricity). The profit from the chair and the table are known. Now, the firm owner wants to know how many chairs or tables (or both) should be produced in the available labor hours, material, and energy to maximize the profit. The number of chairs and the number of tables cannot be negative (such as -1, -2, -3, etc). Hence, the non-negativity constraint is taken.
