Step 1
The outermost layer of all animal cell is cell membrane which is made up of lipid bilayer with embedded proteins in it. The cell membrane plays dual roles; (i) it serves as an insulator and (ii) it functions as a diffusion barrier to the movement of ions. The proteins known as ion transporter or transmembrane proteins helps to move ions across the membrane actively through various ion channels.
