What is meant by Penile prosthesis ?

Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction

Penis is the male reproductive organ in human beings. There are a variety of diseases and dysfunctions of the penis which impairs their personal life. One such condition which is commonly seen is erectile dysfunction. It most commonly occurs in men between the age group of 40 to 70 years.  It takes place when a male can not get or retain an erection hard enough in order to perform sexual intercourse. It not only affects the personal relationship but also causes stress and low self esteem in males.

Step 2 Explanation

When erectile dysfunction begins to affect a man's physical and mental health as well as his relationships, he should reach out for help. Medical attention should be sought to resolve the issue. In order to get correct treatment, the underlying cause is ruled out primarily. Based on the findings, treatment options are discussed with the client. One such treatment option which is invasive in nature is the penile prosthesis procedure.

PENILE PROSTHESIS: Penile prosthesis is considered as the most successful and effective option available to obtain erection strong enough for coitus.  The devices are either inflatable or bendable. It consists of a pair of bendable rods which is surgically implanted within the chambers of erection of penis. And so the penis remains semi- rigid and needs no lifting or adjusting for initiating intercourse. The surgeon selects the correct size of implant and places them inside the penis where blood normally fills up during erection. If two piece inflatable device is being implanted, there will be a valve and a pump. The valve is placed inside the scrotum. For a three piece device, a fluid reservoir needs to be implanted above or under the abdominal wall. Often, a second incision is used in the abdomen as well. And when the device is fitted in place, the incisions are sewn and closed. The entire procedure does not take longer than an hour and sometimes lesser.
