What is Marxist criminology theory?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Criminology is a discipline that deals with a crime or deviant behavior and the causes, triggers, consequences, and manifestation of the same on society and individuals.

Explanation

The Marxist Criminology theory deploys the Marxist concepts and ideologies in understanding and analyzing crime. The Marxist criminology theory states the following:

  • This theory argues that conflict is the basis or origin of a crime. In a capitalist society, the inequality experienced on the social, political, and economic domains by the working class triggers crime or deviant behavior in a society. Therefore, this theory implies that the capitalist system encourages crime.
  •  Marxism argues that laws are made and enforced in favor of the capitalist elite. This implies that the capitalist has the power to modify, transform, and determine the status quo and proves to be unfair and discriminatory for the other class. And therefore, they resort to crime or deviant behavior.
  • This theory also states that all the classes commit the crime, but the capitalists' crime bears down on the society with greater intensity. The legislature and governance in society are fashioned to highlight the crime caused by the marginalized, minorities, and lower classes facilitating the elite class's ideological implementation.
