What is interphase? What role does it serve in the cell cycle?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The cell cycle is the process by which cells, whether eukaryotes or prokaryotes are replicate and reproduce into two daughter cells. It is beneficial to animals in a variety of ways, but it mostly helps them to survive.

Step 2

The eukaryote cell cycle's longest period is interphase. During interphase, the cell obtains nutrients, produces and utilizes proteins and other molecules, and initiates cell division by replicating DNA in preparation for mitosis, and performs other "natural" cell functions. Gap 1, Synthesis, and Gap 2 are the three separate levels of interphase.

  1. G1 phase: The two new cells undergo the first stage of interphase, Gap 1 or G1 after their chromosomes have been separated and the cell membrane has been divided by cytokinesis. The cell performs its natural functions and increases in size during this time.
  2. S phase: The S step, also known as synthesis, is when DNA packed into chromosomes is replicated. Since replication causes each cell formed by cell division to have the same genetic make-up, it is an important part of the cell cycle.
  3. G2 Phase: The G2 step is the final stage of the interphase. The cell has matured, its DNA has been repeated, and it is almost able to split. Preparing the cell for mitosis or meiosis is the final step. During G2, the cell must continue to expand and generate any molecules required for division.
