what is cultural capital ?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Cultural capital may be interpreted as a type of capital "convertible into economic capital, in some circumstances, and perhaps institutionalized in an educational capacity." To investigate the effect of culture on the social stratification mechanism and 'the interaction between behavior and social structure,' Bourdieu and Passeron introduced the principle of cultural capital.'

Explanation

Bourdieu differentiates between three basic types of cultural capital:

  1. The embodied,
  2. The institutionalized, and
  • The objectified cultural capital.

Cultural capital in its embodied state is "a standard version of the mind and the body." In other words, the legitimate cultural choice and conduct, which are often internalized through the socialization period, can be understood. In turn, it is possible to combine an institutionalized cultural capital with "the diplomas that certify the importance of the cultural capital of the corporation." Finally, objectified capital is the consumption and acquisition of many cultural resources in their objective condition (pictures, books, dictionaries, instruments, etc.).
