What is Construct validity?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Construct validity is a term associated with social research. There are three criteria of a study, i.e., reliability, replicability, and validity. The validity is determined by selecting tools resonating with the research topic and the study's generalizability to the population.

Construct accuracy measures the degree of accuracy in selecting tools and research design and how it resonates with the topic under study.

Explanation

There are three approaches to construct validity. The following sentences will explain the same:

Convergent Validity

This type of construct validity tests the validity of the study's measures with a similar measure. Both the measures must point to the same conclusions, as they should converge while testing exposing the validity of the tools used.

Discriminant Validity

This construct validity tests the accuracy of measures or tools used by contrasting it with an unrelated measure. Unlike convergent validity, this validity is accurate when both the measures are diverging away from each other as they are unrelated.

Multitrait or multimethod Matrix

This construct validity combines both convergence and discriminant validity and checks the accuracy of the tools or measures selected for the study across traits.
