what is class consciousness ?
what is class consciousness ?
Class consciousness is the self-understanding of the individual in the social class. It is a historical phenomenon, which is born out of class struggle. The class consciousness and its origin are intimately associated with Marxist theory. It represents a stage and the course of human development at which the proletariat becomes utterly aware of their exploitation.
The understanding of class consciousness would be incomplete without the reference of the false consciousness. It refers to the proletariat’s condition, who fails to understand the genuinely exploitative nature of capitalism. The agents of the bourgeoisie generate false consciousness to keep up the existence of the capitalist system. The presence of class consciousness consciously enhances the ability of the bourgeoisie to exploit the working-class. Dual consciousness is the state in which an individual is persistent in holding two contradictory sets of beliefs at the same time.
