What is asbestos fiber ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Asbestos fiber: Asbestos fibers are naturally occurring silicates that are commonly used in construction materials such as cement and insulation and in many textiles.

Types: Based on mineralogic properties asbestos fibers can be classified into two groups-

1. Serpentine fibers - They are named on the properties of being long and curly. This type includes chrysotile asbestos. In the United States, most of the asbestos is chrysotile.

2. Amphibole fibers- These fibers are more straight and rodlike. These kinds of fibers are amosite and crocidolite asbestos. The amphiboles are more pathogenic and are responsible for most of the neoplastic and non-neoplastic pulmonary diseases associated with asbestos exposure.
