Question
a) What is an ice core?
b) How are ice cores related to history/time?
c) How do they get the gases out of the ice cores?
3. We have learned a lot about greenhouse gases are the cause of global warming, which in turn causes climate change. It is very clear that we are doing this, however some conspiracy theorists (the oil companies) still don't believe the science. They say that the earth has been hotter than this before and that it is natural. Your job is to find evidence that the observations over the last 270 years prove that it is NOT natural. To do this, you will need to do 3 things:
a) Find a graph or multiple graphs that show historical temperatures before the year 1750. Specifically, 10,000 years ago or more. This graph, or these, will show periodic up and down changes, but what is different is that changes in temperature were always taking place over timescales of 1000s of years.
b) Explain the observed trends in the table.
- look at the high and low temperatures over specific ranges (intervals can be 1,000 years, and up to as long as 10 million years)
- are the highs and lows similar to the temperatures over the last 300 years?
How about since the last ice age?
c) What do the facts say about what has been happening on Earth since the Industrial Revolution? (since approx. 1750).
Are we sending our world into an uncontrollable climate nightmare?
Or is the current trend a natural one?
