Question

What is a a bulge in the arterial wall called?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Ans. A bulging, weak region in the blood vessel wall is called an aneurysm. It can occur in any blood vessel but occurs more often in the artery instead of the vein. The place, type, and cause of an aneurysm may be categorized. In several areas of the body, the aneurysm is located, for example, Aorta (aortic aneurysm), Brain (cerebral aneurysm), Neck, Blood vessels in the legs (iliac, femoral, or popliteal aneurysm), Kidney, Intestines, and Spleen. An aneurysm is most common in the aorta. The largest artery in the body is the aorta. Oxygenated blood is transferred from the heart to the body via the aorta. A thoracic aneurysm is a kind that takes place in the cavity of the thorax. Factors contributing to a breakdown of the artery wall may cause an aneurysm. There is no apparent explanation for this. The cause may be part of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Atherosclerosis and high blood pressure are the most frequent causes. Deep wounds and diseases can lead to aneurysms as well. Or in one of the artery walls, you may be born with weakness.

Aneurysms can happen anywhere in your blood vessel, but they typically develop in the belly or chest portions of the aorta – the heart's main blood vessel - or arteries that feed the brain. Aneurysms in other places for example the leg are also less severe. A stroke or massive bleeding may threaten to lead to life is the most severe risk of an aneurysm. A large aneurysm can disrupt the flow and cause blood coagulation. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Aneurysms also have mild to zero symptoms so regular tests will help the doctor look for signs of alert.
