Question

What happens if the material is isotropic?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Materials have certain properties like homogeneity, showing isotropic behavior, etc. Isotropy is derived from the Greek term "iso" which means equal & "tropos" meaning direction. Thus isotropic materials are the materials which have identical properties in all direction at a given point. This means that irrespective of the direction of applied load isotropic materials will exhibit the same strength, same modulus of elasticity, stress, strain, as well as hardness.

The isotropic property of the material is an important assumption that was used while deriving Hooke's law in the Strength of materials subject, Fourier's law of thermal conduction in heat transfer, etc.
