What effect could a volcanic eruption have on the ozone layer? Use your knowledge of atmospheric chemistry to discuss your answer
The layer which is made up of ozone molecules that protects Earth from almost all the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiations are called ozone layer. It is situated in stratosphere. This layer is very important to human life because it absorbs UV-radiations and thereby reducing the risk of skin cancer and other dangerous diseases.
Volcanic eruptions can have impact on the ozone layer if they are strong enough. Because volcanic eruption could double or triple the current levels of the chemical elements bromine and chlorine in the stratosphere. Bromine and chlorine need one electron to become stable and it can be easily get by passing through ozone or they are love to react with ozone. As a result, the ozone layer get depleted.
