What do initiating structure and consideration mean?
Leadership
It is the ability of a person or group of people to persuade and direct followers or other organization members.
Making intelligent - and sometimes challenging - decisions, defining and communicating a clear vision, setting realistic goals, and empowering subordinates with the information and resources needed to reach those goals are all aspects of leadership. They can be found and needed in most social sectors, including business, politics, local government and non-profit groups.
The Ohio State Leadership Studies in 1945 resulted in the discovery of two aspects of a leader's behavior: thought and initiative structure. In Stogdill's Handbook of Leadership: A Survey of Theory and Research and Literals of Clear Leader Behavior, reviews of research on these dimensions are discussed.
The findings of these studies suggest that leaders use two different types of behaviors to help them achieve goals:
People oriented (consideration)
Dedicated to completing tasks (initiating structure)
