Introduction

Late-Modernists like Anthony Giddens acknowledge that people have more choices in terms of their relationships and family arrangements, but they don't think they have as much freedom as postmodernists claim. Rather than being diverse and random, there are still underlying patterns and shared experiences of relationships as a result of our living in "late-modern" society.

For Example, People are less likely to marry as a result of structural changes, for example, gender equality means all partners must work and spend more time building their careers, resulting in the average person having less time to devote to making a relationship work, resulting in a decrease in marriage and an increase in divorce.

Giddens claims that greater choice and a more equal relationship between men and women have transformed the family and marriage in recent decades. According to Giddens, today's relationships have three distinct characteristics:

  • The foundation of marriage and family has shifted to one in which the couple is free to define their relationship rather than merely acting out roles set in stone by law or tradition.
  • The ‘pure relationship' is the most common type of relationship. It exists solely to satisfy the needs of the partners and will only exist as long as it succeeds. Instead of tradition, a sense of obligation, or for the sake of the children, couples remain together because of love, happiness, and sexual attraction.
  • Relationships become a part of the process of self-discovery or self-identity as we experiment with different types of relationships as part of our self-discovery journey.
