Person-centered or Humanistic therapy is an approach to counseling which deals with the way the individuals perceive themselves consciously, as opposed to the counselor interpreting their unconscious ideas and thoughts. This approach was pioneered by Carl Rogers in the 1950s. He proposed that therapy should be simpler, warmer, and optimistic as compared to psychodynamic or behavioral psychologists. Rogers believed that clients can be helped better if they were encouraged to focus on their subjective understanding of themselves rather than being motivated by someone else's interpretation of the individual.
Carl Rogers believed that human beings have an innate tendency to reach their full potential. However, this ability can be restricted by certain life experiences and through the humanistic approach, the person can reinstate the ability to reach the full potential.
