What cranial nerves are classified as primarily sensory?
Nerves are specialized tissues that are made up of functional units called neurons. They are responsible for carrying messages in the form of electrical impulses from the command center that is the central nervous system consisting of brain and spinal cord. The nerves are divided into three types- sensory, motor and mixed nerves.
Sensory nerves are the nerves that carry information from the sensory parts (sense organs) to the brain.
Motor nerves are the nerves that carry information from the brain to the sensory parts of the body.
Mixed nerves are the nerves that carry information both ways i.e. from brain to sensory organs and vice versa.
Cranial nerves are the nerves that arise from the brain and move in and out of the cranium (skull) in which the brain is safely located. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves.
