Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder or GAD is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by chronic anxiety, exaggerated tension, and worry, even when it is very little or no reason to provoke anxiety. The DSM 5 criteria for Generalized anxiety disorder is as follows:
- Excessive anxiety and worry, occurring more days than not for at least six months, about various events or activities.
- The individual finds it difficult to control the worry. And the worry may shift from one event to another.
- The anxiety or worry is associated with three or more of the following sex symptoms for more days than not for the past six months:
- Restlessness or being on edge.
- Being fatigued easily.
- Difficulty in concentration or mind going blank.
- Irritability (which can be observable or unobservable to others).
- Muscle tension.
- Sleep disturbance (included difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep or unsatisfying sleep).
- The disturbance is not better explained by any other mental disorder like having panic attacks (panic disorder), or anxiety being induced in social situations (social phobia), contamination or obsessions (obsessive-compulsive disorder), separation from attachment figures (separation anxiety), post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
- The anxiety, worry, or tension cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning.
- The disturbance is not attributable to any physiological effects of a substance or any other medical conditions.
