What is Web3?
Inside Web3, developers typically do not build and deploy applications that run on a single server or that store their data in a single database (usually hosted and managed by a single cloud provider).
Instead, web3 applications run either on blockchains, decentralized networks of many peer to peer nodes (servers), or a combination of the two that make up the crypto-economic protocol. These applications are often referred to as dapps (decentralized applications) and this term is often used in the web3 space.
It is the name some technologists have given to the idea of a new kind of Internet service that is built using decentralized blockchains — the shared ledger systems used by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The term has been around for years, but has come into vogue in the last year or so. Packy McCormick, the investor who helped popularize web3, defined it as "an Internet owned by creators and users, organized by tokens."
