What are the types of social stratification?
Social stratification can thus be understood as the process of dividing people into strata or layers on the basis of presence or absence of certain characteristics like innate qualities, material possession and performances. It operates on the principle of differentiation originating from unequal access to power, prestige and resources. Thus those possessing socially desirable characteristics are ranked higher than the others. With such system of stratification society appears like a pyramid where the base is comprised of people lacking power, prestige and property while at the apex are those minority of people with socially desirable traits. Thus these people placed into a hierarchy of status or positions have unequal access to rights and privileges.
