Zeolites are microporous, three-dimensional crystalline solids of aluminum silicate. Thus, zeolites are structures of crystalline solids that are composed of silicon, oxygen, and aluminum. These structures form a framework with cavities and channels in which cations, water, and certain relatively small molecules can reside. 
Zeolites have small holes of a fixed size in them that allow small molecules to pass through them easily, but larger molecules cannot pass through them; hence they are sometimes called molecular sieves.
