Question

What are the three basic kinds of formed elements in
blood, and what are their respective functions?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Blood is a red color fluid found throughout the body and is made up of different types of cells. It usually helps in transporting nutrients, metabolites and helps in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Step 2

The blood's formed elements include the cellular components like RBC or Erythrocytes, WBC or the leukocytes, and the platelets or thrombocytes. They make up 45% of the blood's composition. The rest, 55%, is made up of plasma.

  1. Red blood cells or the erythrocytes are biconcave, nonnucleated disc-shaped cells that help exchange gases as they have hemoglobin pigment.
  2. Leukocytes or White blood cells are the body's immune cells that help in fighting foreign bodies like bacteria, viruses, etc. They are of 5 types - Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes.
  3. Platelets or thrombocytes play a vital role in blood clotting mechanisms. They reach the injury site and stop bleeding by forming clots made of fibrinogen.
