What are the therapy aims of Cognitive behavioral therapy ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cognitive behavioral approach to psychological disorders majorly focuses on how distorted thoughts and information processing can lead to problematic and maladaptive behavior patterns. They believe schemas often lead to distortions in cognitive processes leading to abnormal behavior (Beck,1921). Further more distinctive attributions and attributional styles are further seen as precursors to psychopathology. Research into the outcome and effectiveness of psychotherapy has established CBT to be an efficacious treatment for a wide range of psychological disorders.

Step 2

The main aims of CBT approaches are:

  • The irrational beliefs that are mediating between the antecedent event causing maladaptive behavior patterns are identified and are replaced with rational belief systems as provided by the therapist. This causes a reduction in the psychological distress caused by those irrational beliefs (Ellis, 1997).

  • The dysfunctional cognitive structures that cause error in cognition of the social world are to be dealt with. Repeated occurrences of these misaligned and distorted thoughts lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. Hence the therapist here aids in identifying these negative automatic thoughts and providing an insight to an individual's dangerous schema and facilitation of restructuring of the cognitions thus reducing anxiety and depression thus experienced (Beck, 2005).
