Question
What are the signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia? Can hemolytic anemia be cured?
Expert Solution
Step 1
Hemolytic anemia involves the destruction (hemolysis) of erythrocytes. It can be inherited from the parents or acquired during a lifetime. Due to their uncontrolled destruction, the level of erythrocytes in the blood becomes lower than normal. The erythrocytes are responsible for carrying oxygen molecules to various body tissue. The reduction in their number causes oxygen deprivation in the tissues.
Step 2
The red blood cell disorders thalassemia and sickle cell anemia are an example of inherited anemia. The hemolytic anemia can be acquired through infections, medicines, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and blood transfusion.
The signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia are given below.
- Pale skin
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Weakness and difficulty in performing physical activity.
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Enlargement of liver and spleen.
- Increase in heart rate.
- Heart murmur.
- Dark-colored urine is produced.
- It may also lead to jaundice that manifests as yellowing of the skin and sclera (white portion) of the eyes.
