These cells perform the major functions of the body. The term cell was given by Robert Hooke, who stated that all organisms’ bodies, whether unicellular or multicellular, are made of cells. In single-celled organisms such as amoeba and protozoa, all the body functions are performed by a single cell. The multicellular organisms have collective cells which perform a specific function in the body.

Connective tissue is a tissue which connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs. The connective tissue is found mostly in between other tissue types. The connective tissue consists of three main components: fibers (elastic and collagenous fibers), ground substance (amorphous gel-like substance that contains components of the extracellular matrix) and cells (include fibroblasts, adipocytes, macrophages, mast cells and leukocytes).
- Connective tissue is broadly classified into connective tissue proper and special connective tissue.
- Connective tissue proper consists of loose connective tissue and dense connective tissue.
- Loose connective tissue has more ground substance and very less fibers. The loose connective tissue is present in areolar tissue, reticular tissue, and adipose tissue.
- Dense connective tissue has less ground substance and more fibers. The dense connective tissue is present in tendons and ligaments.
