What are the negative impacts of population change?
Expert Solution
Step 1
Introduction
Population growth can be seen as a positive stumbling block to a country's economic development. Growth of population reduces productivity by lowering the per capita availability of capital in a ‘capital poor' and technologically backward country. There is no such thing as too many people when it comes to economic growth.
Negative impacts of population Growth
- Lack of resources: Rapid population growth causes the country's natural resources to be overused. This is especially true in areas where the majority of people depend on agriculture for a living. If the world's population grows, agricultural holdings become smaller and less profitable to farm. There is no way to increase farm productivity by adding new land to the mix.
- Urbanization: It becomes more difficult to navigate the economic and social changes that come with a rapidly increasing population. Housing, electricity, water, transportation, and other issues arise as a result of urbanization in UDCs. Furthermore, urbanization in some rural areas threatens irreversible environmental damage as a result of population growth.
- Lack of Food: Increased population means more mouths to feed, putting a strain on the available food supply. As a result, underdeveloped countries with rapidly rising populations are often confronted with food shortages. They are unable to feed their increasing population despite all of their attempts to increase agricultural production.
