What are the main features of a passive sniffer attack in computer security ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

SNIFFING:

Sniffing is defined as the process of monitoring and capturing all the packets using sniffing tools that pass through a given network. The network protocol analyzers or Packet Sniffers are used by admins to keep track of the network’s data traffic. The best example of this is “tapping of phone wires” to know about the conversation. So, it is also called as Wiretapping that is applied in computer networks.

In any organization, if their ports are open. Then any person in the same physical location( even employees) can plug in the network using an Ethernet cable or they can even connect in wireless mode and sniff the entire traffic.

The sniffing can see traffic that is both protected and unprotected. With the use of correct protocols, the attacking party can attack and gather information and cause issues in the network. Sometimes, the malicious users will use the sniffing tools to enter into the network.

All kinds of sensitive information such as emails, passwords, credit card information, etc., can be sniffed.
