The parathyroid gland is an endocrine gland. Parathyroid glands are located in the neck region behind the thyroid glands. They are light pink colored pea-sized glands and are four in number, i.e., two pairs. It is the smallest endocrine gland. Secretes parathormone (PTH).
The chief cells secrete parathormone, which is involved in calcium homeostasis. PTH elevates the blood plasma level of Calcium ions and decreases the concentration of phosphorous ions. PTH is responsible for bone remodeling and affects bone mineralization by maintaining the calcium level in blood plasma. Parathormone increases the reabsorption of calcium ions and decreases the absorption of phosphorus ions in the DCT and PCT of nephrons, respectively.
