What are the four steps of respiration?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cellular respiration is the sum of the various biochemical means that eukaryotic organisms utilize to extract energy from food, particularly glucose molecules. It is the method through which cells convert sugars into energy. It creates ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) and other forms of energy to control cellular reactions. The cells require fuel and an electron acceptor which drives the chemical process of turning energy into a usable form. Eukaryotes including all multicellular organisms and a few single-celled organisms utilize aerobic respiration to produce energy. It uses oxygen, the most effective electron acceptor accessible in nature. This respiration is an extremely effective process which permits eukaryotes to have complicated life functions and active lifestyles. However, it too implies that they require a consistent supply of oxygen or they will be incapable to get energy to remain alive. Prokaryotic life forms such as bacteria and archaebacteria can utilize other forms of respiration, which are somewhat less effective. This permits them to live in situations where eukaryotic organisms may not.
