What are the features of the left atrium and the type of blood it contains? What vessels empty into the left atrium? The left ventricle? What are the coronary arteries and their function? The coronary
The heart is a muscular organ which is involved mostly in the circulation of blood to different regions of the body. It consists of 4 chambers, the upper right and left atria, and the left and right ventricles below them. Deoxygenated blood from various organs of the body enter the right atrium via the superior and inferior vena cava. From here blood is forced into the right ventricles via the tricuspid valves when the ventricles contract. From the right ventricle, blood enters the pulmonary artery, which carries the deoxygenated blood into the lungs. Oxygenated blood drains into the left atrium via the pulmonary vein. The blood then passes via the mitral valve and enters the left ventricle. On contraction of the ventricles, the closure of the mitral valves prevents blood from re-entering the left atrium, thereby forcing blood into the Aorta. From the Aorta, blood is circulated to other parts of the body.
