Question
What are the differences between the cognitive development of Oxana and that of a child under “normal” upbringing.
Oxana Malaya is a Ukrainian woman who, as a child, was severely neglected by her
alcoholic parents. She was born as a normal baby, but at the age three, her parents started
neglecting her and she began to seek comfort in the presence of the dogs that lived in their
house. The dogs then stood in as foster parents for Oxana. As a result, Oxana adopted dog-
like behaviors, running on the ground on all fours, ate like a dog, and bathed like a dog. She
also couldn't talk and lacked basic human communication skills.
She was eventually rescued at age seven. After intensive rehabilitation, she was able to
adjust to a normal life as an adult, finding work at a farm and even getting into a romantic
relationship. However, her intellectual capacity remains impaired, and according to her
doctors, it is unlikely she will be able to completely be rehabilitated into a "normal" society.
